What was the thought process behind your piece? I was influenced by scientific textbook images of pregnant women, sparked by seeing a painting at the Wellcome Collection. I love juxtaposing ideas of reality and imagination, where it’s obvious but also difficult to distinguish between the two. It was to be an illusion piece which played with the idea that you knew it wasn’t real but represented something that we know in our heads to be, in fact, very real.
Did you intend for it to be viewed as a statement on reproductive rights? The short answer is“no”. It was more the online reaction that deemed that it must have been. Although I understand the weight of politics in the real world, I like to think of my work as a form of escapism from the heaviness we face every day.
Given the subsequent overturning of Roe v Wade in America, do you look at the piece differently now? It’s been so interesting for me to see the different opinions and interpretations that have arisen through other people’s eyes, both in general and related to the recent events in US politics. I guess I didn’t expect to have such a strong response to my work while I was creating, but that’s a big part of what makes the job so exciting upon release. I wouldn’t be an open-minded artist if I wasn’t interested in the opinions of others.
What was your reaction to the Roe v Wade decision, and did it change the way you saw your piece? I felt very heartbroken for all women who have a connection to motherhood in any way, and deeply affected by how politics affects women’s mental health. That time struck a chord in me which knows the struggle women face for just being a woman in this world. Like I said, my work isn’t political. However, having learned“reborn painting” [the process of making realistic baby dolls], and studied aspects of motherhood, I felt deeply hurt within my creation process. It was totally unexpected to me the timing of the show [the CSM graduate show took place in May, just weeks after a leaked Supreme Court draft outlined the overturning of Roe v Wade], but I guess things happen for a reason. We don’t always know why, and there’s also that phrase: is it life imitates art, or art imitates life?
How are you hoping this piece will be remembered? For me at least, this piece has been the beginning of establishing myself and my work. I’m hoping it will be remembered as that – the first impactful piece of many to come.
